I'm Feeling Guilty!

I had a family filled weekend and it was really great...
But I'm feeling some guilt and I need to share it with you!
On Sunday evening I was seriously craving some
CREAMY MILK CHOCOLATE...

I just happen to live VERY close to a Shoppers so I threw on one of my BF's massive sweatshirts over a pair of leggings and pulled my pink little rain boots on and ventured over...

As I stood in the Candy aisle I could hear 2 young girls in the "Home Hair Dye" aisle, discussing which colour they should "do."
I was trying not to listen, but it was hard not too!

As a Professional Hair Stylist, I could tell by over hearing their convo that their home hair dying idea was going to be a major disaster!

I felt like it was my duty to try and help them to prevent their hair from going GREEN, or even worse a causing a CHEMICAL HAIR CUT! *a chemical cut is NEVER pretty!

Only problem is, I didn't want to come across as a creeper... I'm also kinda shy in these situations!

By the time I built up the courage to walk up to them to give some guidance, they had already decided on what they were going to purchase and were at the till... I figured - Perfect timing, I need to cash out too, I will get in line behind them and make small talk about it.

So there I am in line and the cashier says to the 2 girls, "Optimum Card?" they handed it over and continued their excited conversation... I tried to get their attention by giving them a smile and wave but they just looked at me like I was insane... I felt SO stupid!

They ran out out of the store SO quickly in excitement, before I got a chance to really get there attention and help them out!

I FEEL SOOOOO GUILTY!
I can only imagine what has happened to their hair...

So here is my way of rectifying my lack of persistence in helping these 2 young girls... I hope they held off on colouring that night and somehow stumble upon this post!

Okay, as a salon owner this post is TOTALLY bad for business but it needs to be done!

I have a few issues with home hair dye kits but I understand that for some, the price and ease of using something at home is more appealing than going to a salon.

A few guide lines for doing your own colour!

Colouring Virgin Hair:
    1. I suggest using a temporary colour. Using a temp will make it easier to change your colour when you get bored.
    2. Temp colours, NO MATTER WHAT THE BOX SAYS, are only temp if it is a DARKER colour than your natural!
    3. Any time you lighten your hair, it is permanent! You are REMOVING pigment from your hair rather than ADDING pigment to your hair.
    4. If you have VERY dark hair naturally and are trying to lighten your hair be VERY careful with what you choose to use. Naturally dark hair has a high concentration of red undertones whether you see them or not! If you lighten the hair with a product that is "warm" in colour than you are adding even more red, orange, yellow tonality as you lift the darkness out! This can result in a brassy colour.
Colouring Non-Virgin Hair:
    1. Colour CAN NOT remove colour! This means, if you are trying to lighten your previously coloured hair, you can NOT do it with a lighter colour of hair dye. You will have to use a LIGHTENING system. *When you come to the hair salon, we lighten your hair and then TONE it with a TONER. (A blue toner to remove yellow and orange tones leaving the hair neautral, a honey or warm toner to even out the lightened hair leaving it warm and sandy, or a COLOURED toner to cover any inconsistencies in the hair shaft with a lighter but still not BLONDE colour.) You can do this at home by purchasing the lightening system and ALSO a box of dye in your DESIRED colour. This way, if you lighten your hair and it isn't even, you can use the box of DESIRED colour to dye it to that colour.
    2. Going Darker is hard to mess up!
There is a LOT more to the science of colouring, but this post is getting LONG. I am always here to help, so feel free to ask questions!
If you really love your hair, see a hair stylist - they generally know how to colour your hair the best way with the least amount of damage!
Hope this helps!

Nail Polish Gone Green!

Over the past few weeks I have been hearing SOOO much about Green Polish. Between St. Patty's day, and O.P.I's Launch of "Jade is the New Black" which is part of their Hong Kong Collection; I've been seeing green EVERYWHERE!

At Lift we weren't carrying anything even remotely similar, which caused some major curiosity and total ENVY!

So I did some research and found:

"Jade is the New Black" By OPI

and
"Wandering Vine" By Orly
*(I have always been loyal to Orly because they are free of DBP, Formaldehyde, and Toluene.)

Here's the truth: it has taken me a LONG time to get on this Green Band Wagon because I'm not the biggest fan of Green/Blue polishes. I can't seem to put my finger on what it is that bothers me about these colours as polish, but I know they are super HOT right now!

So I gave "Wandering Vine," a shot, to see what all the Hype was about...

I absolutely LOVED the colour in the bottle... but when I finished my polish change I couldn't help but feel a little disappointed that I spent the time doing it, with this colour! Don't get me wrong, it is definitely pretty, I just don't think it's fitting for a nail lacquer.
I generally use this colour for home decor items or MAYBE an eye liner...

My review:
The Product it self is flawless; smooth, rich, creamy and super easy to apply. *Just like ALL Orly Polish.
The Colour; Not for me... my nails sparked conversation with clients... but most of them admitted that they wouldn't sport it themselves!
Looks like Lift Beauty Boutique wont be following this trend!

Here's the truth, the only one RAVING about my Green nails was my BF! When he saw my nails a silly little smile crept over his face and he said; "Good Work E, you're showing support for the Boston Celtics!" (He's a major fan of the team!) I let him believe that I used this colour just for HIM and the Celtics!
Hahaha, Funny Man I have! Xo

What do you think about this Green Trend?

Exposing your Toes!

Open Toe Shoes and Cute little Sandals are in ALL of the stores and sooner than later they will be out on the streets and ON your FEET!

You know what makes a really pretty pair of sandals, not so pretty?
Yellowed NAILS!

Okay ladies, I know some of you have experienced this for one reason or another and you aren't alone!
Many women AND men have this problem!
For us ladies it isn't THAT bad, we can just cover it up with a great pedicure and nail polish!
But if you want a french, or a sheer light colour, you're in trouble with yellowed nails.

So here's a little trick:
Try rubbing whitening toothpaste on your nails for 2-5 minute and then wash!
Sounds strange right?
Fact: Your hair and nails are made of the same protein (keratin) as your teeth!
What works for your teeth, should work for your nails!

P.S. No Shame in Having your man do it too!

*By doing this you may temporarily remove the natural shine from you nails, but it will come back and in the mean time you can wear them MATTE, which is totally in, or put some shiny top coat on!
Hope This Helps... Xo

Lauren's Lingere Shower!

Hey Ladies,
Hope you had an amazing weekend! I would like to formally introduce you to my other half - Not my Boyfriend but my BFF, Partner in Crime & fellow
Lift Beauty Girl!
You have heard LOTS about her and even seen pics of her STUNNING face, and now here she is with HER weekend Gossip Sesh... *She definitely had a more eventful weekend than I!

Heeeeerrrrreeeee'ss Laaaaauuuuurrrrreeen...
(That was my attempt to type out how an announcer would welcome her! haha)

Thanks for the warm welcome Ladies, I'm Lauren and I can't wait to get to know you!
This weekend marked the official (or not so official) start of wedding season! I had my bridal shower this Sunday and it was really a Beauty Girl's dream! Plus having the Lift Beauty Girls there was great, we had impromptu makeup and hair touch ups as needed, hmmm that's a fun idea for the pre-bachelorette party!
My Maid of Honour (Big Sis) put together a beautiful afternoon where Lace met Tea Cups for this super fun gathering of girlish sweets (complete with lipstick sugar cookies) and lingere gifts.

I knew cameras would be SNAP snap SNAPPING all day long, and since I was the guest of honour I felt I should doll myself up to fit the theme of Girlie Lingerie Garden Tea Party
(Photo: Left-Big Sis Alicia, Middle-Little Sis Beanie & ME!)
*My Gorgeous sisters are Lift Cosmetics and Osis fanatics, their "looks" were LIFT looks 100%!

I felt tousled hair would be suiting for the lingere theme but with a rosy 50's inspired makeup look would match the tea party side of it all. I figured I would go bridal with a white dress, complete with bustier style stitching and an a-line skirt.
Here's how I got my LOOK:
I know Emily's already taught you all of the tips and tricks to getting that tousled look with your hair, but here's a recap - she taught me how to do this, I'M NO HAIR STYLIST (like her), If I can do this, you can do this!

1. Washed my hair before bed, put some Buff and Morrocan Oil in it to leave it soft and shiny. Then got some beauty sleep.
2. Woke up a little early and plugged in my curling iron in first thing!
3. Brushed out my hair and sprayed some Glamour Queen in it to freshen and give it some volume.
4. Twisted sections around my iron *Held the iron horizontally to give it more of a 50's roller set look.
5. Next step: I got some breakfast, did my makeup, danced around to Lady Gaga. All of this action loosened my girls and gave me that messy look!
6. Right before I left my place I sprinkled some Dust It on my roots, flipped my head over and Shook it Out!!
7. Voila!

My Make-up, a Complete Lift Cosmetics Look...

1. A 50's tea party look NEEDS glowing skin. Mixed a little of Camouflage Concealer (I used Light Beige) into my moisturizer and smoothed it over my skin.
2. Dusted my skin with Dual Powder Foundation (I used N2, cause I'm pale)
3. Applied 502 Glazed Amethyst Blush underneath my cheek bones to create definition.
4. Then brightened my cheeks with 471 Cotton Candy Blush, a gorgeous soft shimmering rose colour, by applying it over the apples of my cheeks and over my eyelids.
5. HIGHLIGHT, HIGHLIGHT, HIGHLIGHT. I used Pink Opal Shimmer over my cheekbones, inner corner of my eyes, and on the brow bone.
6. Lined my upper lash line with Onyx Eyeliner, kicking it up at the ends just a little bit for that 50's style eyeline.
7. Uses as much mascara as my lashes could handle. I used the Lash Primer first to create an even fuller lash look and to keep my lashes really healthy.
8. Finished it off with a pink rosy lip. I chose Crush from our Mineral Lipstick Collection to keep my lips super soft.

Well, there you have it, some simple tricks for my shower inspired look! Come into the store and I will show you the products in person! Mention this post and I will give you 15% off any of the suggested products!

The Craving to GLOW

In Spring we all crave that GLOW that we naturally get in Summer, so her's a little trick on how to look bright & blushing without the true glow from summer sun!
*Use a SOFT sweep of Bronzer across the cheeks and bridge of the nose.
*Keep it light, we don't want you looking like you've been hitting the beds.
*Then take your blush and apply a wash of colour to the apples of your cheeks!
**To get that extra "Glow" apply a very sheer layer of your blush to your upper eyelids and contour your eyes with the bronzer.

Pop by and mention this post, we would be happy to show you how in person, and pick the perfect shades of blush and bronzer just FOR YOU!

Bronzer: $18.00

Beauty Sleep... ZZZzzzZZZzzz

I usually give you a little Gossip Sesh from my weekend on Tuesday's...
But this weekend I didn't do much!
I made it a goal to NOT schedule myself with so many social events; I was in desperate need for some down time!

So, my weekend consisted of SLEEP!
*Beauty Sleep*

To be exact, 15hrs straight of uninterrupted quality shut eye!
When I woke, I felt incredibly disoriented but I was LOOKING GOOD!
My Dad used to tuck me into bed every night, as a kid, and he would say: "Goodnight Kitty Cat, get some good Beauty Sleep."
I really never thought too much about what that meant, until right now!
Do you know the true benefits of a GOOD night's sleep and why it's called BEAUTY sleep?

Here's the science behind it:

  • LOGIC: Laying down changes the effects of the force of gravity on your face and neck. Your facial muscles need a break just like the rest of your body. By laying down/sleeping you are giving your skin and facial muscles a chance to be relatively still and without expression - Making repetitive facial expressions is the number one contributor to wrinkles and fine lines.  (Ever seen what your face looks like laying down? Everything looks different - look specifically at your eye-brows. Tip: Always have your brow's shaped - waxed, threaded etc. sitting upright.)
  • FACT: When we are asleep the entire body perspires more. This moisture helps to smooth wrinkles and is considered a natural skin treatment.
  • FACT: We typically experience a surge in growth hormones while sleeping. The secretion of growth hormones helps to repair and rebuild body tissues like muscle and bone. But it's really called BEAUTY SLEEP because many of the body’s cells increase in production and slow the breakdown of proteins during deep sleep. Proteins are needed for cell growth and repair of damage from stress and ultraviolet rays.

Most importantly; Stress harms the body's ability to repair itself. Sleep deprivation applies stress to the body and leads to an unhealthy appearance.

So ladies, GET A GOOD NIGHT SLEEP, EVERY NIGHT and try sleeping on your back to avoid facial wrinkles from your pillow.

Oscar Buzz

* I dunno about you guys, but as I watched the red-carpet show I really wasn't too impressed with the make-up looks of the 2010 Oscar Awards!

That being said, when Miley stepped infront of the camera I totally GASPED!!! In my opinion she looks AMAZING!

From Lift Cosmetics; Here's how you would recreate the look!

Glowing but NOT shiny. Get this perfectly clear look by Cleansing and Toning with our Alpha Hydroxy Skin Care. Follow up with the Alpha Hydroxy Moisture Complex to smooth out your skin and control shine for the perfect makeup base!

Skin:
Foundation- Keep the skin FLAWLESS with our Flawless Finish Cream Foundation. It provides full coverage and leaves your skin glowing not matte. Plus it comes in a compact great for touch ups!

Oscar Buzz!

You didn't think I would go without talking about the Oscars AT ALL, did you??
Friday's and Saturday's are Tip and Trick Days, So let's foucs on the most talked about "looks" of the 2010 Oscars and see how I can help you recreate it at home! Hope you enjoy.. Xo

Cameron Diaz and Sandra Bullock's hair Stylist seem to been part of the few who didn't get the memo that having hair UP, is totally IN!

As I am sure you all notices all of the fashionista's had they hair pulled back for the big night! Most of them where showing volume and texture which made the styles look less manicured and more organic to juxtipose their well polished jewlery and perfectly hemmed dresses!

(Miley Had the best of this look, but we will be using here for tomorrow's make-up tips!)

Here's how you can do it at home in 10 easy steps...

  1. Don't wash your hair for 2 days!
  2.  Apply DUST IT, by Osis to the roots!
  3. Flip your head upside down and place your hands (with fingers spread apart) at the root and shake shake shake!
  4. Flip back over and your hair should be pretty messy and big! Spray that mess with ELASTIC, by Osis *On promo at Lift right now! Receive a free Dry style and Mini Make-up App Certificate with the purchase of any Osis Hair Spray.
  5. If you like LOTS of volume, add a little back combing.
  6. Divide the hair into 2 sections and put each section into a pony, one above the other.
  7.  Use a tail comb or your fingers to pull and loosen the hair near your face. Leave it messy!
  8. Curl the 2 pony's, brush them out, and then tease!
  9.  Now start pinning!
  10. Spray again with Elastic and TADAAA!!! Looks Beautiful!

Avitar, Family and Spring Trend Shopping

Back to work I go... but here's and update on my weekend! Xo

After 2 straight weekends of partying I needed a BREAK! I feel OLD :(

I had an awesome day at work on Saturday, LOVE my clients! Afterward, I met up with my brother to hang out! It seems when we are together, we revert right back to the way we were as kids! It's fun to be able to laugh and be ridiculous together! After an hour or so, of us being total goofs, we straightened ourselves out, to meet up with our significant others, and our Mom and Dad (who were in from out of town) for a bite to eat, and to see Avitar!

WOW! I am sure I don't need to go on about Avitar, as I think I was officially the last person in North America to see it!

(Pic: Me, My Big Brother and my kittie Tye!)
Sunday, I slept in - much needed - and then went for a stroll in my neighbourhood to check out the Spring Trends in some of the amazingly cute, independent boutiques near by!

    Trends this season:

    • Shirt Dresses with Wicked Heals!
    • Florals and Denim (I'm not talking the standard JEANS, I'm talking jackets, shirts, shorts, skirts and hats!)
      - and -

      • Military Styles, sharply cut, structured pieces.
I won't need to do TOO much shopping this season! Most of the looks, I can get from what I have in my wardrobe from years past! *I keep everything, styles always come back!

The only thing I'm missing are some floral pieces to add into the mix! While I was on my walk I scouted some great items at Honey and Sense of Independence! I started with a great accessory! The runway shows were show-casing MULTI strand necklace! Take a look at my new purchase! How cute would it look with a floral top, a pair of boyfriend jean shorts and nude heals? Put a little boho wave in the hair, and a soft sweep of bronzer on the cheeks... Ahhhh what a cute little look!

        Happy Shopping Ladies! Xo

P.S. This Necklace comes in gold too! So pretty, the heart is a locket, designed by a Canadian and it was a great price! You should check out Sense of Independence on Eglinton!

    It's my weekend, Ladies!
    Hope you enjoy yours...
